The first several months of the school year our reading and science will deal with animals, seeds and plants, how we grow and change, how the seasons change, and how animals and natural things change. The books listed below relate to these themes. Any other books that relate to these themes are also acceptable alternatives. All students must read (independently or with you) for 20 minutes every day. I also believe that your child will become a more active reader if you get him or her a library card as soon as possible. The following books are recommended: predictable pattern books, wordless picture books, and early readers. Please keep a record of all books read throughout the summer and be prepared to turn in the list on the first day of school. Your public librarian will be glad to help you locate these particular books. Those children having a library card will be able to receive a No Uniform Pass for one day at the beginning of the school year! Remember, reading to your child at a higher level increases his or her intelligence level by expanding vocabulary and stretching attention span. An excellent resource for parents is the Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelese Have a great summer reading for the joy of it!
